Dairy Unit Podcast

The Cal Poly Dairy Unit is very well known throughout central California. Located only a little more than 1 mile off campus, the dairy unit consists of: Cal Poly Creamery, Eugene & Rachel Boone Dairy Science Complex, Leprino Foods Dairy Institute, an artificial insemination lab, and a multitude of barns and ponds. Being such a large operation, the unit requires a surplus of student employees. While one might expect to see only students of an agricultural background with a major in the Cal Poly agriculture department, it is actually quite the opposite. Steven Degrut is a first year student at Cuesta Community College. Steven is a part of Los Lecheros Dairy Club (a Cal Poly club) and has been working at the dairy unit since he moved to San Luis Obispo. When I asked about the type of people who work at the unit he states, “We [have a lot] of people ranging from … almond farmers to people who just … really like cows and want to learn more about … the whole industry.” By offering people of all backgrounds an opportunity to work at the Dairy Unit, this unit is able to spread more information on what they do and its importance.
