New Growth

I have always wanted to learn how to garden. There is something so satisfying in planting tiny seeds and watching them grow. At the beginning of this school year, a friend and I put ourselves on the waitlist to get an on-campus garden plot. At the end of fall quarter we received news that there was a plot available for us.

For an on-campus garden plot there surprisingly is a large list of rules that need to be followed in order to maintain the plot for the entirety of the quarter. Due to this, the types of plants that we could plant were limited. When my friend and I received news that we got a garden plot for the winter, we immediately began to research plants.

Learning about perennial and seasonal crops to plant in such a small space was definitely a new learning experience for me. Growing up with no experience in agriculture, planting a garden was something new for me. After doing a lot of research and going to Growing Grounds to pick out our starter plants and seeds; a beautiful garden was planted.

After winter break, we came back to campus hoping our garden would be growing large a bountiful. Almost all of the seeds we had planted had sprouted; the starters we planted were growing larger as well. This experience has taught me a lot about all the little things that go into something as simple as growing peas or cauliflower in the California climate. I am very happy to have learned how to plant a winter garden.
